Tawang Math is located in Tawang Nagar, Tawang District, Arunachal Pradesh, India. Tawang Monastery is a famous Buddhist monastery in India located at an altitude of 3000 meters above sea level. The Tawang Monastery was established by Merek Lama Lodre Jameso in 1680-81 at the request of the 5th Dalai Lama with the help of local people. (Tawang Monastery was founded by Mera Lama Lodre Gyatso at the behest of Dalai Lama Nagwang Lobsang Gyatso.) Tawang Monastery is the largest Buddhist monastery in India. Tawang Monastery is the second largest monastery in the world. It is a major holy place for Buddhists. This monastery is one of the holiest places in India for the followers of Buddhism.

Tawang Math is famous for its 16th century architecture, offering a serene view of the Himalayan valley. Apart from this, there is a library and much more to see in Tawang Monastery, which has been a center of attraction for Buddhist pilgrims as well as tourists from abroad.
The best time to visit Tawang Math is from March to September. To visit Tawang Mutt, one can travel by flight and train from Tezpur airport in Assam. Alternatively, one can travel by bus. Since June 2008, Arunachal Pradesh government has started a helicopter service from Guwahati to here. From Tezpur in Assam to here by road, buses, taxis. that can be traveled by private vehicle
