The day is remembered as the beginning of political awakening among the Kashmiri people, 22 people were killed on this day in 1931 by the soldiers of the autocratic king. On July 13, 1931, the Dogra army opened fire on people gathered outside the court hearing Abdul Qadir's case in Srinagar.
The day was celebrated till the year 2019, however, Kashmir Martyrs' Day has been removed from the list of official holidays after the subsequent central government abrogated the controversial Article-370 from Jammu and Kashmir. This was one of the many important decisions taken by the government after the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
