Today is International Malala Day. Since 2013, International Malala Day has been observed every year on 12 July to honor education and women's activist Malala Yousafzai for her work. Pakistani citizen Malala Yousafzai was born on 12 July 1997. On 9 October 2012, Malala was walking home from school when she was attacked by a Taliban gunman, who shot her in the head and neck. He was initially treated in Pakistan but later sent to England for better medical treatment. Nine months after the shooting incident, Malala gave a powerful speech at the United Nations headquarters on her 16th birthday. She started the Malala Fund in 2013 with her father to spread awareness about education among girls. Thus, the United Nations declared 12 July as Malala Day to honor Malala Yousafzai for her outstanding work towards education, which has become an international symbol of the fight for girls' education. In 2014, Malala was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, making her the oldest recipient of the award.
